Spelling Book Grade 3 equips students to spell through the understanding of phonics and word structure. Students use this book to study and apply rules that govern the spelling of English sounds. A reference copy of the Carden Vowel Chart appears at the beginning of the book. The book’s 73 lessons are divided into two parts taught on consecutive days.
On the first day of the lesson, the teacher will consider the Rule and Words sections with the class. The spelling words are dictated by the teacher and self-corrected by students during the teaching session. After the lesson, students will use their personal copies to review the spelling rules, the Carden Chart, and think about the example words in the spelling list of Part 1. Memorizing spelling words is discouraged. However, applying the rules that govern the spelling of many words is encouraged.
On the second day of the lesson, with their books closed, students will listen attentively and write as their teacher dictates the sentences which appear under the heading Dictation. After the class, students will have the opportunity to individually review their work and compare it with the content in their own books.
The first day of the lesson equips students to accurately spell example words by studying and applying the rules of phonics and word structure showcased in those words.
The second day allows students to apply what they’ve been learning as they write down sentences dictated by the teacher. Those sentences form a paragraph or two. Interesting facts about astronomy, animals, weather, and more are included in the paragraphs. The class will analyze the sentences in a group participation exercise. Vocabulary development, the proper use of grammar, punctuation, capitalization, pronouns, and verbs are featured. Finally, students will learn to organize the content of the sentences into an outline.
