Children begin Joan, the second of Carden’s two pre-readers, once they have finished I See. They are ready to read sentences. They’ll learn the purpose of a period, and experience dropping their voices at the end of a sentence. Teaching procedures found in the teacher’s edition of this book will encourage children to develop a speaking vocabulary, become articulate, enunciate, listen, and organize material. As is the case with all Carden readers, there are no illustrations. Each child will use his or her mental image to bring the story to life and will enjoy illustrating it personally with crayons or pencils.
