Why is this workshop important? The Internet is awash in methods for learning to spell English words. Whole Language techniques encourage students to invent ways to spell the words they need for self-expression. Phonics programs motivate students to learn phonograms and sounds to improve their ability to spell accurately. Although these approaches are fundamentally different, both rely heavily on memorization as a tool for success. Teachers and parents are encouraged to help students memorize more than 220 sight words, such as those compiled by Dr. Dolch in 1948—experience how students learn to spell words without memorizing word lists.
